City of Lausanne

The project
A modular, turnkey data center cooled by water from Lake Geneva.
The Issues
To improve security, service continuity, and the overall energy efficiency of its data centers, the City of Lausanne commissioned Module-it to design its main data center and backup facility in September 2014. Based on a modular design, the project was delivered at the end of 2014 and went live in January 2015.

The Module-it Solution
To meet these needs, Module-it opted for a turnkey implementation of a modular data center and a second container-based backup data center. The main data center, with an IT density of approximately 80 kW, is cooled using water from Lake Geneva. The container (it-Box) and technical infrastructure are located outdoors, and the equipment is cooled by two indirect free-cooling chilled water units. At both sites, the energy efficiency of the facilities has been optimized, with target PUE values of 1.2 for the primary site and 1.4 for the secondary site.
The strength of the solution
With the establishment of these two sites, Module-it has provided the city of Lausanne with secure data centers that ensure service continuity and feature low energy consumption.
